Swim Lessons 

The Blue Springs School District Aquatic Centers are  committed to teaching children and adults in the area how to be safe in and around the water. Our instructors are highly trained in not only relating to, but effectively teaching our students. We offer group as well as private lessons for all ages! Remember that the ages are only suggestions for each class. Everyone comes in at a different skill level and we will be sure to find you a class that best suits your needs!

The swim lesson classes will be held at The Blue Springs South High School Aquatic Center at 1300 SE Adams Dairy Pkwy. Private lessons are held at South and Blue Springs High School Aquatic Center at 2401 NW Ashton Drive 

Private Lessons

Private lessons are great if you want one-on-one attention in the water! In these lessons, the instructor caters to your skill level and helps you to push past any barriers you may have. Our trained professionals have worked with children and adults of all ages, learning levels and disabilities. Whether you want to train for a swim competition or jump in for the first time, private lessons may be the class for you!

Private swim lessons $25/30 minutes or $45 /30 minutes for 2 children at the same time. 
2 lesson minimum and can be at either Aquatic Center.

Group Swim Lessons Fall 2019

$60 / group swim lesson Minimum of 2 students per class.  Classes will be cancelled if minimum is not met. All classes run for 3 weeks and meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. ( Warm water pool) Session 2 Options: Nov 4-Nov 21   Shrimp, Seahorse, Starfish, Guppy
 5:30 PM-6:00 PM;      6:05 PM-6:35 PM;       6:40 PM-7:10 PM
Flipper, Seal, Sailfish and Barracuda are on Monday and Wednesday in one class that is called Conditioning
SWIM LESSONS WILL BE HELD AT BSSD SOUTH AQUATIC CENTER! CONDITIONING WILL BE HELD AT BSSD AQUATIC CENTER!   NOTICE TO PARENTS:  For optimal learning experiences, we ask all parents stay in the bleachers away from your child's class. There is no sitting on the deck. If your child has been ill with diarrhea, we ask that you keep them out of the water for 48 hours. This will keep all swimmers safe from water illnesses. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR MISSED LESSONS OR "NO SHOWS" 

Group Lesson Classes

Parent & Child - 6 months to 3 yrs (Shrimp)

Comfort with the water is important starting from a young age. Parents and children participate in guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills. Sign up and hop in with your little shrimp!

Skills Taught:

Blowing Bubbles
Submerging mouth and noes
Front/ Back floats
Roll from front and back/back to front
kick on front/back
arms and leg action front

Retrieving objects on top of the water

Preschool Aquatics - 3-5 yrs (Sea Horse)

Fun age appropriate lessons that teach basic aquatics safety and survival skills to increase children's comfort level in and around the water. The Seahorse class is so much fun!

Skills Taught: 

Enter the water independently
Jump in the water
bobbing (5 seconds)
Front/ Back gliding with catch
Front/ Back floating with assistance
Combined arm and leg on back/ front assistance
Roll front to back/ back to front with assistance
Kick board with assistance

Level 1: Intro to Water Skills - 5-7 yrs (Starfish)

Basic water safety led by enthusiastic instructors; Starfish will help your child learn life-preserving skills in the water. This class focuses on getting students to feel comfortable with putting their faces in the water, basic breathing skills, and water safety.

Skills Taught:

Enter/ exit independently
Jump in independently
Bob 10 times
Float on back independently (5 seconds)
Float on front (5 seconds)
Combined arm and leg action on front independently
Combined arm and leg action on back assisted
Roll from front to back/ back to front
Use ladder/ steps independently
Front/ Back glide into floats
Tread independently (10 seconds)

Use kick board independently

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills- 7-10yrs (Guppy)

An introduction to stroke training, Guppy will ensure that your child can swim independently and for longer distances.

Skills Taught:

Jumping in deep water independently
Bob 10 times in deep water
Front / Back Floating independently (10 seconds)
Front/ Back action independently
Elementary backstroke independently
Front/ Back glides into action
Retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool, Tread for 20-30 seconds

Level 3: Stroke Development - 10-13 yrs. (Flipper)

Flipper students build on Level 2 skills and are introduced to front crawl, elementary back stroke, survival float, scissors kick, dolphin kick, and the fundamentals of treading water.

Skills Taught:

Jumpin in deep water off the diving board
Sitting/ Kneeling dives
Rotary breathing
Flutter Kick
Dolphin kick
Breastsroke Kick
Treading water for 1 minute
Changer position from vertical to horizontal and back 

Level 4: Endurance Training - 10+ (Seal)

Seal students continue to improve endurance with an increase in distance while new skills such as sidestroke and butterfly arm action, and back crawl.

Skills Taught:

25 yd free style
25 yd backstroke
15 yd butterfly
Standing dives
Open turns all strokes
Tread for 3 minutes
Flutter kick on back
Dolphin kick with board 25 yd
Breaststroke kick with kick board 25 yd 

Level 5: Stroke Refinement -12+(Sailfish)

Sailfish focuses on refinement of all strokes introduced, improving endurance by increasing distances, and learning flip turns at the wall from both the front and back.

Skills Taught:

Standing dive into swim, 5 strokes of half way
Flip turns (free/back)
Breast and fly turns
Tread 4 minutes
Free style 50 yd
Backstroke 25 yd
Breaststroke 25 yd
Butterfly 25 yd
250 continuous swim any stroke

Level 6: Swimming & Skill Proficiency- 13+ (Barracuda)

As an endurance-building, swim-team training level, Barracuda is just right for that child you sometimes confuse for a fish!

Class Focus: 

Endurance and form
Perfecting strokes
Free style 100 yd with flip turn
Backstroke 50 yd with flip tun
Breaststroke 50 yd with turn
Butterfly 50 yd with turn

5 minute tread
500 yd continuous swim any stroke

Adult Swimming Lessons

Are swimming lessons something that you are considering for yourself? It's an important skill that you should be comfortable performing. Our trained instructors will help you with anything you need!
